How much does a bail bond cost?
A bail bond in California cost 10% of the total bail amount. If your bail is set at $25,000 for example this would cost $2500 and is not refundable once a bail bond has been posted. Collateral and or co-signers may be required as well to execute a bond.
What is collateral and do I need it?
Collateral can be anything of value such as cash or property in the form of assignment of a mortgage to secure a bail bond. This is held in case the bond has to be paid by a bail bond agency because a defendant did not show up for court. For example: If a bond is $10,000.00, 10% of that $10,000 is called the premium charged to the indemnitor (person getting the defendant out of jail), and it is not refundable.. Collateral is returned the day the defendant shows up for his/her court date. Collateral can be converted to cash to pay the bond if the defendant does not show up for court and approximately 185 days have passed without the defendant and his/her attorney re-setting a new court date. If a defendant shows up to all court dates the collateral is promplty returned without incident.
How soon will my loved on be released?
Once a bail bond is posted by our comapny it can take anywhere between 2-8 hours on average to be released from any particular jail. It can take much longer if the jail is overcrowded or if there are external problems with booking the defendant in. We always keep you up to date as to what to expect on the release time of each of our clients.
What happens if a defendant does not bail out?
If a defendant does not bail out he or she will then be awaiting thier first court date which is typically called your arraignment date. If the defendant has warrants or other cases pending this can vary greatly. Please consult an attorney about any specifics you may have regarding the legality of your case in question.
